Army of Tarsh

I started work on the Army of Tarsh in 10mm, using the HOTT ruleset.

  

I ordered a first batch of 10 mm mini's from Pendraken to build a few test units.  I started by gluing them on a piece of wood, then primered them in skeleton bone colour.

After that I started painting them in light colours, taking care to make repeat movements and not leaving anything unpainted.  I then liberally washed them using the new vallejo washes - colour burnt umber.  The results definitely will do the trick on the tabletop.

Lion Broo

Hier is een exotische Broo, gebaseerd op een leeuw.  Hij zal deel uitmaken van de persoonlijke lijfwacht van Koning Ralzakark van Dorastor.
This is an exotic Lion Broo.  In our scenario, he will be a part of the body guard of King Ralzakark of Dorastor.

Deze Broo is van Reaper, een beetje exotisch, maar aangezien Broo alles kunnen bevruchten, kan het nog wel gekker.
This is a reaper Broo.  The stag is a bit exotic, but Broo can fertilize anything, so we're likely to see some more exotic abominations.

Huis Karanen van de Hiording

In Runequest hebben de jongens nieuwe characters gerold, Kemal en Drayin, twee leden van de Hiording Clan.  Het zijn twee simpele cottar geworden, waarvan er een als leerjongen bij de shaman werkt en de andere leerling wapenmaker is.  Op de foto de longhouse van Thane Karanen en de directe omgeving.

The boys rolled up new characters this weekend:  two Hiording Clan cottars, belonging to the Karanen Household. One is an apprentice weaponmaker, the other carries stuff for the shaman.  This is the start of the first adventure: Preparing for the Holy Day. 

Dragon Snail: the making of

Ik ben begonnen aan een nieuwe dragonsnail, omdat de eerste te groot was, en de look ervan iets te fantasy-achtig, terwijl ik een chaos-look wil, een verdorven schepsel, een tegennatuurlijk wezen.  Ik heb het ontwerp gebaseerd op de Ral Partha Dragon Snail, dan passen ze mooi tesamen.

I started making a new dragonsnail, because the first one was a bit too big, and its head made it look like a fantasy creature, rather than a chaotic, foul being, that exists destpite the laws of nature.  I based the design on the Ral Partha mini, that way they make a nice team.

Hier de eerste stap:  een schets op papier, en het plooien van het geraamte in gewikkelde ijzerdraad 2 x 0,25.
Step one: A sketch on paper, and the folding of the frame.  I use twisted wire, 2 x 0,250 mils.

Ik wil een helemaal open bek en een half open bek, beide nogal naar voren gericht.  De ruwe vorm maak ik met basic milliput om de kosten te beperken.
I want one mouth completely open, the other one only half open, and both heads looking to the front.  I made the rough shape in milliput standard.  That way I can cut costs a bit.

 

Ik leg dan een laagje procreate om de milliput and maak het glad met water, vervolgens wat plooien in de nek.  De kop doe ik zo dat de ijzerdraad een  interne richel vormt waar later de tanden op kunnen steunen.

Ik gebruik schuimkarton om de groffe vorm van de schelp te maken, dat vermijdt dat de schelp een dikke blob putty opslokt aar je toch niks aan hebt.  Zo moet ie er ongeveer uitzien.

I use procreate to make the outer skin.  Smoothing with water, then I create some folds in the neck.  When  sculpting the head I make sure the wire frame creates a ridge on which I can add the teeth later.

I am using foam board to create the shape of the snail shell, that way I avoid having to use a big blob of putty for the inside.  After a bit of cutting this is what I ended up with.

 

Met behulp van wat ijzerdraad en propjes procreate maak ik propedia of hoe heet dat.  Antennekes.  Ik boor er een gat voor in de kop.

Using some wire and blobs of procreate I sculpt the propedia, then I fix them to the head by drilling a hole and glueing them in.

 

 De schelp heb ik ook gemaakt in procreate.  Hier zie je het beestje volledig in procreate, er moeten natuurlijk nog wel wat details worden afgewerkt.  De grootte is nu wel OK, zoals de Lunar wacht aantoont.

I also covered the shell with procreate.  This is the little beast at this stage. And a Lunar guard for size comparison.  This is much better.

Hier wordt de schelp wat grover gemaakt, en op de nek verschijnen dikke puisten, waaruit de etter van chaos druipt.

Spicing up the shell, and I added big boils on the back of the neck, the chaos ooze dripping out.

Hier begin ik met de harige slierten op het hoofd.  Zo krijgt het beest iets schattigs, tot het zijn belager in twee bijt natuurlijk.
Here I start working on the hairy things on the head.  The beast is made to look a lot cuter that way, at least until it bites off a PC's head.

De tanden erbij, en nu moet alles drogen alvorens de laatste afwerkingen kunnen worden uitgevoerd, dan rest enkel nog het primeren en te schilderen.
Here I added the teeth, now everything has to dry properly before touching up some last bits and the subsequent priming and painting.

Longhouse

Hier een longhouse, gebaseerd op de longhouses van de kelten.  Ondergedeelte gegoten in Hirst, de rest in balsa en schuimkarton.  Het ziet er nog supernieuw uit, ik moet het nog een beetje weatheren.

Behold a longhouse, based on the celt design.  The bottom part is made out of Hirst blocks, upper part is balsawood and foamboard.  The roof I made using old towel.  This is loosely based on the design by Dan Becker.

Lunar soldaten

Hier zijn nog enkele Lunarezen, met de scharlakenrode uitrusting ter ere van de rode maan.  Nog een paar Lunarezen afwerken en ik begin aan de eenheden voor HOTT.  Ik ben ondertussen ook aan de Sartar warbands begonnen.

Here are a few more Lunar troops, wearing the typical crimson red attire in honour of the Red Moon.  A few more to go and I can start working on the HOTT Lunar units.  I also started work on the Sartar warbands.

Hippogriff

Hier is de hippogriff, half paard, half arend.  Als je er een kan temmen kan je hem ook berijden.  De kans is klein maar in theorie moet het kunnen.

Here is the hippogriff, half horse half eagle.  It is said that a brave man can tame and ride it.  That could very well be legend only, though.

Reuzen griffioen

Groter dan een gewone griffioen, en nog veel dodelijker, de reuzengriffioen heeft het lichaam van een reusachtige leeuw en de voorpoten en bovenlichaam van een arend.  Hij vliegt en kan dus nagenoeg onhoorbaar aanvallen.  Hij gebruikt zijn vervaarlijke klauwen en bek om aan te vallen, maar een klap met zijn vleugels is meestal voldoende om een man op de grond te gooien.
Larger than a normal griffon, and much more deadly.  The giant griffin has the body of a huge lion and the claws and upper body of an eagle.  He can fly and attacks like an eagle as well: fast and silent.  He can attack using his claws and beak, but he can make any man fall over with a bash from his wings.

De Jack-o-Bear

Een chaotisch wezen dat zijn tegenstander demoraliseert en zo gevaarlijker is dan dikwijls verwacht wordt.
Here's the Jack-o-Bear, a chaotic creature that demoralises their enemy, often making the encounter a lot more dangerous than initially expected.

De headhanger

De headhanger is een wezen van Chaos met een lugubere voorliefde voor mensenhoofden.  Als hij de kans krijgt, knipt hij het hoofd van zin slachtoffer af, en plaatst het op een tentakelantenne op zijn rug.  De tentakelantenne verbindt zich met het hoofd, en voorziet het van voedsel.  Het hoofd blijft dan leven, en de headhanger kan gebruik maken van de magische kracht en de spreuken die het karakter kende.

The headhanger is a chaotic being with a sordid interest in humanoid heads. When given the chance, he will cut off the head of his victim, and skewer it on one of the antennae on his back.  The antenna with nourish the severed head and keep it alive.  The headhanger can now use the manna and spells known by the character.

Sculpting testje - Milliput White

Hier enkele gesculpte dingetjes voor RQ.

Here are some sculpted thingies for use with RQ.

Ik heb ze gemaakt in Milliput white. Het materiaal is vrij plakkerig, en niet erg gewillig om van vorm te veranderen. Daardoor is het volledig ongeschikt voor hoofdjes of dergelijke details. Het werkt wel prima voor dingen zoals deze tentjes.
Here are a few little things I made in Milliput white. It's quite a sticky material, not very cooperative when changing shape, and not really suited for detailed things like faces. On the other hand, it works perfectly for things like tents.
Hier een detail van 'The friendly snake' uit de Chaos caves in Snake Pipe Hollow. In dit soort toepassingen komen de beperkingen van Milliput white zeer goed aan het licht.
Here's a detail of the Friendly Snake from Snake Pipe Hollow's Chaos Cave. In this kind of sculpting applications the limitations of Milliput white become clearly apparent.

Een eerste grondlaag was niet zo goed gelukt, dus heb ik er met houtschilfers en Noch bergpasta een nieuw relief op gezet. Dat was een pak beter.
Here's the first primer. I didn't like the look of it so I worked it over with wood chips and a bowl of Noch mountain putty. That looked a lot better.

RuneQuest: Snakepipe Hollow

De party loopt een Broo patrouille en een bijzonder grote scorpion man tegen het lijf. Eén van de Broo is een necromancer, dus een tros skeletten krijgen ze ook nog op hun dak. Ondanks defensief geklungel overleeft de party de aanval.

The party runs into a broo patrol and a particularly nasty Scorpion Man. One of the Broo being a necromancer, they also get a wave of skellies to handle. Their defense strategy is a disgrace, but somehow they still survive.

Scratchbuilt Brugje

We hadden een brug nodig voor RQ en WH, en omdat ik er geen kon vinden naar mijn goesting op het internet, heb ik er maar zelf een in elkaar gestoken. Met een stuk kartonnen koker, PVC plaat, en schuimkarton.
We need a bridge for RuneQuest and Warhammer, and I was unable to find one on the various internet stores, so I decided to build one myself. Based on a piece of cardboard core, black foam board, and PVC board.

Met glad karton en veel geduld worden de field stones vastgekleefd. Aan beide kanten, jawel.
Some supply of cardboard, and a lot of patience, to glue the field stone pattern. On both sides.
Het bruggetje wordt vervolgens zwart gespoten. Het wegdek wordt verontreinigd met een beetje korrel. De voetjes worden aangesmeerd met milliput standaard.
Then the bridge is basecoated black. The road is soiled with a bit of dust and grass. The feet I shape up with milliput grey.
Tenslotte een aantal keren brushen met steeds lichtere grijstinten, gras erop, een paar kleine details, en klaar is kees.
Finally, a few drybrushings in light grey, flocking, and some nice final touches to finish it off.
