Another attempt at making 10 mm WWII houses…

About which I’m still not happy: I used air dry clay around a foam core, and the shape becomes way too organic, the clay cracks while drying, and to cut a long story short, I just chucked the test in the bin.  After the corrugated cardboard and the printed board I kinda wonder whether it’s not simpler to invest a dollop of cash and simply buy some houses. Alternatively, I might purchase some N scale windows from Grandt Line and give it a try using thick plastic board.
  

Shock Troops!

De vakantie zit erop.  Tijdens de vakantie hebben we de Flying Lead regels eens uitgeprobeerd, en dat is zeer goed meegevallen.  Wargames Factory heeft nu deze postapocalyptische shocktroops uitgebracht, en die gaar prima werken voor deze regels.

Holidays are over.  During our stay in Germany we playtested the Flying Lead rules, and the experience was positive.  Wargames Factory released these postapocalyps shock troops, exactle the kind of thing I was looking in order to set up good looking demo games for Nikfest 2010.

Als voetjes gebruik ik 5 cent stukken.  Er zitten zeer veel optionele stukken in, zodat je verschillende soorten eenheden kan maken.  Ik voel dat ik al snel een tweede dooske ga moeten kopen, ze zijn te veel fun.

I use 5 cent pieces as base, I like the size of 22 mm.  The box is loaded with optional parts, allowing you a lot of choice in how you want your unit to look.  I had a revelation yesterday, I am going to buy another box in the coming days.

Fotocabine voor figuurtjes

Een 25 mm hoog figuurtje mooi op de foto krijgen is niet makkelijk.  Je maakt zo'n foto met een macro-objectief, en zit dus met je lens op enkele centimeters van het onderwerp.  Gebruik je een flits, dan is de foto overbelicht.  Zoniet, dan riskeer je onscherpe foto's en gelig licht.
Om dat te voorkomen heb ik deze fotografeerstand ineen geknutseld in schuimkarton.  Bovenaan zit een deksel met een rond gat waar de lamp in past.  Bovendien kan je gekleurd papier gebruiken om de kleur te beinvloeden, bijvoorbeeld rood voor de Red Moon in Runequest.  Op de achterwand kan je een afdruk van een wolkenhemel, bergen of een andere achtergrond kleven.  Je moet alleen nog een stukje maquette maken, en daar ben ik dan ook ineens aan begonnen:

Making a pretty picture of a 25 mm miniature is no easy task.  You tend to use a macro lens, so your distance to the mini is only a few centimeters.  If you use a flash, you're bound to overexpose, if you don't, the lack of light will cause the picture to be blurry, and/or you can suffer from poor coloring as well.

I built this picture box to remedy that problem.  I used foam-board, glued with wood glue.  On top comes a cover with a large round hole, exactly the size of my daylight lamp.  Using colored metallic film you can cause colored reflections, or you could use transparent or even color lamps.  On the back I'm gonna glue some nice backgrounds that complement the miniatures well.  All that remains to be done is make a diorama floor, so here goes:

 In isolatieschuim, met een mengsel van goedkoop vulmiddel en zand voor het relief, en acrylverf voor de ondercoating.  Nu nog begrassen, en klaar is kees.

I made this in insulation foam, covered with a mix of cheap filler and sand.  I put on a basecoat using cheap artist acryls.  Flocking is next.

Nieuwe dragonsnail

Omdat mijn tweehoofdige dragonsnail een beetje eenzaam was, heb ik een vriendje geboetseerd.  Voetstukje is een rondel, draadframe met milliput regular, afwerking met procreate.  Nog een beetje ruw, maar ik ben er toch tevreden mee.

My two-headed dragonsnail was feeling lonely, so I decided to sculpt a buddy for him/her.  Just because I can.  Base is a metal washer, twisted wireframe skeleton, rough build with milliput regular, finishing with procreate.  Better than the first one, but still a little rough.  I'm happy with it nonetheless.

Workbench

Ik ben begonnen aan een nieuwe longhouse voor de Tula, en enkele koetsen voor de karavaan naar Alda Chur.

Ik heb een broertje gemaakt voor de andere Dragonsnail.  Hier na het basecoaten en de wetbrush.

Werkbank

Zodra de Kelten afgewerkt zijn, en de recente terreinstukken, staat er een kolonne figuurtjes klaar om aan te beginnen: trollkin, dragonewts, allerlei Lunarezen, centaurs, skeletten en nog veel meer.

As soon as the Celts are finished, and the work on the new terrain pieces is finished, there’s a miniature mob ready and waiting to be painted: mainly Lance and Laser stuff for RQ, including trollkin, trolls, dragonewts, Lunar from many different places in the empire, skeletons, centaurs, and lots more.

Twee heuveltjes, fase 2

Hier zijn de twee geschilderde heuveltjes, er moet nu enkel nog strooigras e.d. op en klaar is kees.

The painted hillocks, only thing left is adding grass and foliage.

Wind Temple Stage 2

De werken aan de Orlanth Wind Temple zijn weeral serieus gevorderd: De hirst onderdelen zijn geschilderd, de balsa constructie is geschilderd en gemonteerd, en de dakpanelen en wanden in 3 mm schuimkarton zijn vastgekleefd.  Blijft enkel nog de dakbedekking.

Construction of the Orlanth Wind Temple has advanced considerably over the weekend.  The hirst parts have been glued and painted, the balsawood framework is finished, and the roof and wall panels have been structured and glued into place.  Only thing left to do is the thatched roof.

     

Hiording Wind Temple

Een Hiording tempel van Orlanth, die ook dienst doet als tempel voor alle godheden in de Hiording Tula of elders.  28 mm, met hirst vloerdelen en muren, balsa houtwerk, schuimkarton wanden en dak met stro.

A Hiording temple to Orlanth, doubling as temple to all deities in the Hiording Tula or beyond.  Floor and Walls in Hirst blocks, balsawood frame, foamboard walls and roof.  28 mm scale.

 

Twee heuveltjes

We hadden behoefte aan een paar nieuwe heuveltjes, en er liggen stapels materiaal, dus zijn we er maar gewoon aan begonnen.

We needed a few new hillocks, and since we have tons of material lying about, we quickly started making two.

 
 

Lunar Tarsh Cataphracti

Enkele Cataphract eenheden van het leger van Lunar Tarsh.  Figuren zijn Pendraken 10 mm.  De bedoeling hier was verschillende methoden voor schilderen en basen te evalueren.
These are a few cataphract units from the Lunar Tarsh Army.  Actually it's a basing and painting test to compare painting and basing methods.

Nieuwe dragonsnail

Ik vond dat de tweekoppige dragonsnail die ik een tijdje geleden gesculpt heb echt behoefe had aan een eenkoppige partner, en nu ben ik er aan begonnen:  een skelet in twisted wire, en met eenvoudige milliput heb ik de basisvorm al vastgelegd.  Ik heb een massa schelpjes gevonden voor een prikje in de craft store, dus die moet ik al niet meer eigenhandig sculpteren.
I thought that the two headed dragonsnail I sculpted a while back could do with a one-headed partner in crime, so I went ahead and started sculpting it.  I made a skeleton in twisted wire, and sculpted the base shape in standard milliput.   I have found a large bag of shells in the crafts store for a few EUR only, so I don’t have to sculpt my own, which is good, coz it ain’t easy.

De werkbank

Momenteel staan er een hele boel figuurtjes op de werkbank: Trollkin, Orlanthi, Lunarezen, skeletten, een reus, en veel meer.  Parallel worden er ook nog een hele bende clanleden afgewerkt, gebaseerd op Warlord Kelten.
At the moment the workbench is loaded with miniatures: Trollkin, Orlanthi , Lunar, some skeletons, a giant, and lots more.  I am also finishing up the Hiording clan fyrd, using Warlord celt minis.

Comparison Rapier Ducks vs Mongoose Ducks

Hier zijn nieuwe ducks van Rapier Miniatures.  Ze zijn duidelijk groeter dan die van Mongoose, en ook veel bruter van lichaamsbouw, met gigantische hoofden.  Maar het detail is prima, dus ze zijn wel bruikbaar als gamemaster PC.


I have gotten some new ducks from Rapier.  They are a bit bigger, but also differently proportioned:  the head is a good bit bigger, and the legfs are different.  Still, they look fine, and detail seems good, they'll make fine GMPCs

Hiording Tribemen: Karanen Stead

Het huidige project op de werktafel behelst het schilderen van de leden van huis Karanen, Hiording clan, van de stam der Colymar, het huis van de karakters in onze RuneQuest campagne.  Hier worden een hoop Carls en Thanes geschilderd, nadien staan er een aantal vrouwelijke krijgers en kinderen op het programma. Alle figuren zijn van Warlord en van uitstekende kwaliteit.

In my ongoing project to paint up a representative part of my RuneQuest campaign household (The Karanen from clan Hiording of the Colymar Tribe) I currently have a batch of Fyrd and Thanes being painted up.  All the -excellent- miniatures are from Warlord.  After this I have a nice batch of female and children, before painting up the rest of the household.

Kemal and Drayin

Hier zijn de twee hoofdrolspelers van onze avonturen in Glorantha: Kemal, de helper van de Sjamaan en volgeling van de aardecultus, en Drayin, de leerjongen wapenmakerij en adept van de stormcultus.  Kemal (l) is het karakterke van Dominique, en Drayin (r) wordt gespeeld door Dani.  De figuurtjes zijn van Warlord.

These are the protagonists in our Glorantha campaign: Kemal, Shaman initiate and Ernalda Lay Member, and Drayin, Weaponmaker initiate and Lay Member of Orlanth Thunderous.  Kemal, on the left, is Dominique's character, and Drayin is being played by Dani.  These are Warlord minis.

Painting new units for my Tarsh army

Ik heb een aantal tips gekregen op het forum van Pendraken, en heb deze nu eens uitgeprobeerd op een stelletje 10 mm minis.  Ik probeer in een volgende fase nog een fotootje te maken.

Following some pointers I got on the pendraken forum I tried this new way of painting strips of 10 mm miniatures.  I'll try to report on how it comes along
